When to Hire an Interior Designer: Signs You’re Ready
One of the questions we hear most often is: When should I hire an interior designer?
Our answer? Earlier than you probably think.
Our project calendar is often booked 2–9 months in advance, depending on the size and scope of a project. And the work often begins long before the first design decision is made. We may spend several months reviewing the scope, visiting the property, establishing a realistic budget and assembling the right team.
We’ve had clients reach out a full year before their project officially gets underway—and that early conversation can make all the difference.
If you know a renovation or new build is on the horizon, here are a few signs it’s time to bring a designer to the table.
1. You’re Planning a Renovation or New Build
Ideally, your interior designer should be involved before plans are finalized and well before construction begins.
The most successful projects allow the architect, contractor and designer to collaborate from the beginning. We want to be part of the early conversations around layout, cabinetry, lighting, plumbing, materials and, most importantly, how the home will actually function.
Bringing your designer in early allows the design to inform the architecture—not simply respond to it after the fact.
2. You Have Plenty of Ideas—but Need a Clear Direction
Maybe you've saved hundreds of images and have a strong sense of what you love, but you're not sure how all of those ideas come together.
That’s where a designer can add real value.
Our role is to identify the common thread, edit what isn't working and translate inspiration into a cohesive design that feels intentional, personal and uniquely yours.
You don't need to arrive with a perfectly defined aesthetic. That's part of the process.
3. You’re Ready to Establish a Realistic Budget
A successful design starts with understanding the whole project, not just the obvious expenses.
Before we begin, we want to understand the full scope—from construction and cabinetry to stone, lighting, furnishings, window treatments, art and all of the details in between.
Establishing realistic expectations early allows us to make thoughtful decisions about where to invest, where to pull back and how to allocate the budget in a way that supports the overall vision.
4. You Want Help Managing the Decisions
A significant renovation or new build involves hundreds of decisions—and many of them need to happen much earlier than homeowners expect.
We help create the roadmap: what needs to be designed, approved and ordered, and when.
Having that structure in place keeps the project moving, reduces unnecessary last-minute decisions and ensures that individual choices continue to support the larger vision.
5. You Want Something You Couldn't Have Created on Your Own
This is the fun part.
The unexpected piece of marble. A vintage dresser transformed into a vanity. The perfect wallpaper. Custom cabinetry. Handmade zellige. That slightly strange antique that somehow makes the entire room come together.
A great interior shouldn't feel like it came straight from a showroom—or like it could belong to anyone.
You should recognize yourself in the finished home. Our job is to take what you love and push the idea a little further than you might have gone on your own.
So, When Should You Reach Out?
As soon as you know you're serious about the project.
You don't need finished plans, a contractor or every detail figured out. Sometimes, the first step is simply a conversation about the property, scope, budget and timeline—and determining what the right team should look like.
The earlier we are involved, the more thoughtfully we can shape the project from the beginning.
At Fletcher Rhodes, we design full-service renovations, new construction and interiors throughout Sonoma, Napa Valley, Wine Country and beyond.
If a project is on the horizon, even if it’s still in the early stages, we’d love to start the conversation.
