How to Style A Shelfie

We love a good shelfie, and we incorporate our shelf-stylin’ tricks as often as we can whether that’s in our clients’ homes, our studio, or in the new The FR Collection Sonoma shop. What makes a good shelfie? Follow our top 5 tips below…

shelf styling with Fletcher Rhodes: 5 tips

Tip #1 Mix items of different shapes, sizes, colors, and textures

To start, you want to gather up all the pieces you have. To style like a designer, it’s important to curate a collection of items that are different shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. This will give you the most options to work with as you follow the next tips.

Tip #2 Alternate between single stacks and pairs or trios

Once you’ve got your items, start playing with single stacks — such as books with a decorative topper — and pairs or trios. You want to mix the formulas around so that you don’t have all shelves with only singles, or only doubles, or only triples. This creates a gallery-like look to your composition.

Tip #3 Create small groupings

A long empty shelf? It can seem like a lot of empty real estate to fill up, but if you break it up into groupings of similar items, it won’t look as busy. Be sure to vary the heights and colors.

Tip #4 Use one color to unify a collection

But if you’ve got a lot of disparate items that can’t be grouped, try this trick: put all the items of a single or similar color together. This creates the look of a collection carefully curated over the years.

Tip #5 Integrate small pieces of art

Books, decorative items, bowls and vases are all great for a good shelfie. But instantly elevate your arrangement with the addition of a few framed and canvas art pieces, leaned up against the back. It breaks up the composition while adding vertical visual interest.
