Winter in Wine Country

Do we say enough how much we love where we live? While many flock to Napa and Sonoma in the summer and fall, we actually love the crisp blue skies and quiet rhythms of winter life here. It doesn’t take much but a quick trip outdoors here to regain a spark of creativity and a reconnection to the natural world and the materials of the Earth. I have no doubt that the land surrounding our studio inspires much of our work, and I am grateful to get to be a part of it.

Recently four of us from the designer crowd headed out for a little art field trip at Donum Estate in Carneros, California. A stunning backdrop for a wine tasting and a sculpture walking tour around the grounds in the late afternoon sun with sweeping hills of vineyards as far as the eyes can see… let’s just say, it breathes new life into you.

Some photos from our adventure! Highly recommend visiting on your next trip here. Donum offers a few options for tastings and tours here.

Donum is known in the valley for being home to more than 40 large-scale open-air sculptures found within their grounds, bringing together a global community of artists, including works from Ai Weiwei, Keith Haring, Subodh Gupta, Doug Aitken, and many more. As they explain,

“Dotted throughout the landscape, each piece plays with scale, nature, and imagination. Interpretation is left up to the visitor and perspective is completely personal. Many pieces were curated in collaboration with Donum’s owners and the artist, uniquely created to fit with the land.”

I realize I am writing this while much of the East Coast is under snowfall and below freezing temperatures, so it may not be taken too kindly. But hopefully the smiles and sun warm you up!
