Kids Rooms, The FR Way
Tips for styling a child’s space that will stand the test of time.
We, being fans of the neutral room palette, are surprised when the default for kids rooms design equals cutesy, bright, and more often than not, age-specific. At Fletcher Rhodes, we prefer to approach designing kids spaces as we do with adult spaces: making them timeless, refined...but fun.
Here are a few tips to get you started…
#1
Start with a Neutral Palette
We always start with a neutral palette that can grow with the child. Anyone with a little one can tell you, they might have a current favorite color or theme in the here and now, but oh how quickly that changes! This month it may be space, next month it may be sports. (And we love that sense of curiosity and exploration in our kids, don’t we?)
#2
Add in Subtle Touches
With a backdrop that is classic and timeless, we can add in color pops and find ways to layer in a ‘theme’ in a more subtle way. Textiles, lighting, and accessories are a lot easier to swap out down the road when those universe and space elements need to switch to unicorns and sparkles.
#3
Let Your Kids Personalize It
We also encourage our clients’ kids to contribute! Getting your child to personalize their room with their own artwork or favorite items, or allowing them to style their own shelves and dresser tops can add that touch of individuality no designer could ever emulate (even us).
